HUMBOLDT Open Day: Geospatial Data Harmonisation in Action

Demonstration of the feasibility and advantages of Spatial Data Infrastructures based on software tools and processes for Data Harmonisation

The HUMBOLDT Open Day will take place on 28th September 2010 in Lisbon, Portugal, hosted by the Instituto Geográfico Português (IGP). The programme is organised by the consortium of the HUMBOLDT project in cooperation with the VESTA-GIS project.

The four-year EU project HUMBOLDT contributes to the implementation of a European Spatial Data Infrastructure (ESDI) that integrates the diversity of spatial data available for a multitude of European organisations. The main goal of the HUMBOLDT project is to enable organisations to document, publish and harmonise their spatial information. The software tools and processes developed demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of an Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe as planned by the INSPIRE initiative, meeting the goals of Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES).

Scope of the Workshop

The HUMBOLDT project has entered its final phase. Therefore, we would like to use the opportunity of this open event to demonstrate the main outcomes and achievements of the project.

The Open Source Tools and Services developed in HUMBOLDT will be demonstrated in the application context of selected scenarios (e.g. applications from the area of Protected Areas, Ocean and Marine Environment, Transboundary Catchments, Atmosphere, or Flood Risk Management). In addition to these showcase presentations, the participants will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the training courses available on the HUMBOLDT training platform as well as to receive supervised hands-on experiences with the tools for data harmonisation.

Participants

The targeted participants for the HUMBOLDT Open Day are SDI Stakeholders and more generally users dealing with heterogeneous geodata. In particular the Open Day is addressed towards end users, data providers and persons concerned with data integration and harmonisation who are involved in the INSPIRE and GMES initiatives, but it will also be useful for GIS users working in any relevant application field, GIS developers or educators.

Agenda

The following topics will be part of the programme for the HUMBOLDT Open Day. The main focus will be on the showcases demonstrated in Block 2 of the workshop.

Block 1: Introduction and Background

  • Principles of data modelling and harmonisation
  • Introduction to the technical framework and its validation in HUMBOLDT

Block 2: Demonstrators

  • Selected showcases from application scenarios that demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of Spatial Data Infrastructures based on software tools and processes for Data Harmonisation
    • European Risk Atlas: Cross-border disaster management
    • Protected Areas: Integrated management of nature resources
    • Transboundary Catchments: Cross-border data harmonisation to support trans-boundary catchment management
    • Ocean: Application for assessing and managing marine and ocean oil/contaminants spill crises
    • Atmosphere: Provision of location-based personalised air quality information
  • Opportunities for supervised hands-on experiences with the HUMBOLDT Tools and Services

Block 3: Training

  • Overview on the training components and modules available on the Training Platform
  • Opportunity for supervised access and testing of the Training Material
  • Introduction to the HUMBOLDT community website

Outlook and Future Perspectives of HUMBOLDT

Workshop Organizers

Host organisation of the workshop is the Instituto Geográfico Português (IGP) of Lisbon, partner in HUMBOLDT. This Workshop is organized and supported by the HUMBOLDT project consortium in cooperation with the VESTA-GIS project.
