French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (IFREMER)


IFREMER is a public institute maintaining research and service activities for understanding, predicting, protecting and managing the ocean resources. It manages the main national marine research facilities, vessels, underwater vehicles, computer, network and National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC). SISMER is the NODC for France and focal point for IOC/UNESCO international oceanographic data and information exchange programme. It manages the data from national sources and participates in the data management structure of several international projects. Both metadata like Cruise Summary Reports and conventional data collected during national and international projects are systematically compiled, safeguarded and disseminated. Standardised Quality Assurance procedures are implemented for data formatting and checking, standards to insure comparability of data from various sources.
