Overview of the Humboldt Project

The four-year (Oct. 2006 - Sep. 2010) EU project Humboldt contributes to the implementation of a European Spatial Data Infrastructure (ESDI) that integrates the diversity of spatial data available for a multitude of European organisations. It is the aim of this project to manage and advance important parts of the implementation process of this ESDI.

The main goal of the Humboldt project is to enable organisations to document, publish and harmonise their spatial information. The software tools and processes created will demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of an Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe as planned by the INSPIRE initiative, meeting the goals of Global Monitoring for Environment and Security.

The development process is community-centered, therefore it requires the continuous collection and integration of user input and feedback, including some person- and organization-specific information. To protect the privacy of users, and to comply with the European regulation, the Humboldt Consortium has created and is strictly applying the below Privacy Statement.

Privacy Statement of the HUMBOLDT Project

This is a privacy policy for the Humboldt Project, and for the Humboldt web portal. The Humboldt web portal falls under the responsibility of the Humboldt consortium. The portal is concerned with the dissemination and exchange of information about the Humboldt research project. It is not concerned with commercial transactions or with the exchange of data for marketing purposes.

We invite you to contact our Project Office if you have questions about this policy at: po@esdi-humboldt.eu

Relevant Legislation

The Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 24 October 1995 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data.

Information Collection and Use

All information collected by the Humboldt Project by means of on-line or paper-based forms, questionnaires, interviews or any other way of communication from the users belongs exclusively to the Humboldt consortium. It will only be used for the internal needs of the Humboldt Project. The Humboldt consortium is the sole owner of the information collected from this site and will not sell, share, rent or pass the data in other ways to third parties, except for internal data management that is solely executed by the Humboldt portal administrator, an external contracted partner that functions as the official project office. Information with personal references will only be stored as long as it is necessary for the project. Humboldt reserves the right, however, to disclose information as required by applicable law, in order to protect its rights or property.

Access to the Collected Information

Access to your personal data will only be given to persons belonging to the institutions represented within the Humboldt consortium, and will only be used for the needs of the Humboldt Project. The only exception of this statement, again, implies the storing and processing of the collected data through Humboldt's contracted project office.

In order to receive an account for the Humboldt web site, users have to complete a registration form. During registration a user is required to provide a username and a password of his/her own choice in addition to an email address. In case the Humboldt portal administrator needs to contact the user the provided email address is used (e.g. in case the password is lost). Neither we nor the portal administrator will give the email address away to any third parties or expose it anywhere. It is optional for the user to provide his/her name.

Log Files

Whenever you access a resource (page, image or the like) on the Humboldt website, this action is recorded in one or more logfiles. Those logfiles are the webserver's access and/or error log as well as the firewall's traffic log. In case of prohibited requests a record is written to one or more of the firewall log, the log of the NIDS and the log of the application level firewall. Please note that none of those records contains personal data. It is impossible to track the actions of a specific visitor from those logfiles alone.

A webserver log record contains the following data:

  • the first line of the request (“request header”),
  • date and time of the request,
  • bytes sent,
  • status code of the webserver,
  • source ip address,
  • “user agent string” provided by the requesting browser,
  • referring resource.

Apart from date, time and bytes sent, the firewall logs and the log of the NIDS contain more protocol specific information like source and destination ip address, source and destination port and details about the ip packets seen.

If a request was rejected by the application level firewall, a record is created that contains the complete request (including all headers and post payload if available) in addition to the data mentioned above.

The collected data is used to ensure the proper operation of the webserver, its services and the network environment. It helps to detect abnormal behaviour within the network caused by erroneous software, misconfiguration, intrusion attempts, high load or the like.

Pages of the Humboldt website contain hyperlinks to other, third party websites. We do neither know if the operators of these third party websites have a privacy policy and stick to it nor do we have means to enforce such a policy for third party websites.

Correcting/Updating Personal Information

The user has the right to request information about the stored personal data. He has the unrestricted right of requesting the deletion, updating and correction of the stored personal data. This can be done by sending an email to po@esdi-humboldt.eu.

Notification of Changes

If we need to modify our privacy policy, we will post those changes on our website so our users are always aware of what information we collect, how we use it, and under which circumstances, if any, we disclose it.

If you have any questions about the collection, processing or use of your personal data, wish to correct, block or delete any information or withdraw any approvals which have been given, please contact:
